I "solicitors" di solito forniscono assistenza legale in materia di compravendita di immobili, testamenti, recupero crediti e istanze di divorzio e ci si può rivolgere a loro direttamente. Alcuni sono qualificati a rappresentare i propri assistiti sia nelle cause civili che in quelle penali. I "barristers" non trattano direttamente con i clienti ma intervengono dietro richiesta del "solicitor": sono qualificati per esercitare nei tribunali di grado superiore, mentre i "solicitors" in quelli di grado inferiore.
